Erie’s Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Oct. 7 on Montessori Children’s World’s proposal to convert the vacant former Lions Club building at 480 Cheesman Street into a weekday childcare center.

The proposal would reuse the existing building, with interior code and accessibility upgrades, new windows, an accessible entrance and ramp, and a fenced outdoor play area. The center plans to operate Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with four teachers, the town’s staff report says. Staff recommends that the commission recommend approval to the Town Council; that is not a commission decision or final town approval.

The application seeks the town’s “large” childcare-center category, defined as 16 or more children. The application narrative says a state application was approved, but the actual state-licensed capacity remains undetermined, staff says.

The town’s agenda and hearing notice schedule the hearing for Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Erie Town Hall Council Chambers. If the commission recommends approval, the Town Council would still make the final decision.
