Boulder County board recommends landmark status for Bowman House
The 5-0 advisory vote sends the 1960 Boulder Heights home to county commissioners, who will decide whether local landmark protections apply.
The Boulder County Historic Preservation Advisory Board voted 5-0 on Oct. 1 to recommend landmark designation for the Bowman House, a 1960 home at 109 Sentinel Rock Lane in Boulder Heights. The recommendation is advisory; the Board of County Commissioners will make the final decision, the meeting recording shows.
County staff described the house as a Usonian-style design by architect Titian Papachristou, built by physicist Ronald Ray Bowman and a friend. Staff cited its broad eaves, horizontal lines, grouped windows and natural materials as features that connect it to modern architecture in Boulder County. They also pointed to the design and innovative secondary-burn fireplaces in recommending landmark status.
If commissioners approve the designation, local landmark status can help prevent inappropriate exterior alterations or demolition. Under Boulder County’s landmark guidance, exterior changes and demolition are reviewed by the Historic Preservation Advisory Board; interior work that does not change the home’s exterior appearance typically does not require historic review.
A staff member said at the meeting that commissioners were expected to consider the recommendation Oct. 22, but described the date as tentative. The commissioners’ decision is pending.
