Superior council to hold hearing on outdoor-lighting ordinance
The proposal would redefine nighttime hours for Superior’s lighting rules, with a later cutoff for businesses and events open past 9 p.m.
Superior Town Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing July 13 on an ordinance that would change how the town defines nighttime hours for outdoor-lighting rules.
Ordinance O-4 Series 2026 would set nighttime hours at 9 p.m. to sunrise or 8 a.m., whichever comes earlier. For businesses and events open past 9 p.m., nighttime hours would begin 30 minutes after closing.
That matters because Superior’s code requires non-essential outdoor lighting to be turned off during nighttime hours. The ordinance defines non-essential lighting as decorative or aesthetic lighting not needed for safety or security, including landscape lighting, illuminated signage or advertising after business hours, and façade lighting.
The town says the change is intended to reduce light trespass, preserve the night sky, limit skyglow and promote energy conservation. The public packet also says the Planning Commission recommended approval Feb. 17 and that the council introduced and ordered publication of the ordinance Feb. 23.
The available July 13 agenda shows the item as a public hearing, but the materials reviewed do not show whether the council ultimately approved it.
