Lyons commission to review Flagstone Culvert preservation memo
Proposed revisions urge the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to revisit a “negligible” historic-impact finding and consider preserving visible sandstone and other repair options.

Lyons’ Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 27, to review revisions to a draft memo asking the Colorado Department of Local Affairs to reconsider its finding that repairs to the Flagstone Culvert would have a “negligible” historic impact. The agenda lists the item for review and approval.
The proposed revisions call for preserving and rehabilitating visible, public-facing sandstone features. They also suggest considering in-kind replacement of flagstone lids or slip-lining underground sections where technically feasible.
A 2025 engineering report by Martin/Martin describes replacing certain damaged lids with Lyons Red Sandstone and slip-lining as repair options. The report says its recommendations are conceptual, not intended for construction, and does not identify which approach the town will use.
