Erie council endorses expanding Boulder County commission
The 4-1 vote supports a Nov. 3 ballot measure to expand the board from three members to five; a separate measure would determine how the seats are elected.
Erie Town Council voted 4-1 on Sept. 22 to support expanding the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners from three members to five, adding the town’s backing ahead of the Nov. 3 election. The meeting recording captures the vote and council discussion.
Mayor Andrew Moore supported expansion as a way to improve representation, citing the value of district representation and his experience with a five-member commission in Weld County. Councilmember Rivera opposed the town taking a position, raising concerns about county costs and regional collaboration. She also cited a county commissioner’s concern that the change could dilute the voting voice of people of color; those were concerns raised in the discussion, not established effects of the measure.
The ballot separates the question of expanding the board from how its members would be elected. Boulder County’s explanation says Question 200 asks whether to increase the commission to five members. If voters approve, Question 201 would offer a choice between five district-elected commissioners and three district-elected commissioners plus two elected countywide. The county says five commissioners would take office in January 2029 if the expansion passes.
